Workways NAIDOC Week Jobseekers’ Day Out
As part of NAIDOC Week 2021, Workways Australia are holding their Jobseekers’ Day Out to celebrate NAIDOC Week and First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country and give local jobseekers information and opportunities to get into the workforce.
One of the highlights of the day is the unveiling of a shipping container that the Workways Work for the Dole team have transformed into a cafe in collaboration with The Women’s Centre Townsville.
Workways staff and Work for the Dole participants have prepped the container with paint donated by Bunnings ready for local Aboriginal artist Amanda Tronc to paint the container with an original design to represent the collaboration between The Women’s Centre and Workways.
After the unveiling by Phillip Thompson, MP the coffee container will be providing free coffees with beans, machine and cups donated by local small business, Wise Monkey.
After NAIDOC Week it will be taken to a permanent home across from Bunnings in Townsville’s north where Workways’ clients will be given the opportunity to manage the container and gain the skills to help them find employment in Townsville’s hospitality scene.
The coffee container will be supporting the local Townsville community and creating jobs in the process by sourcing a local business to supply coffee beans and bio-degradable cups.
Alongside the coffee container will be stalls hosted by local businesses and community organisations such as Dream Believe Achieve, Effective Employment Training, STEPS, Townsville Aboriginal and Islanders Health Services, ATODS Townsville, JBS Townsville and Services Australia with activities and opportunities to connect jobseekers with the broader local business community.
Leah Rueben, Australian under 19 women’s bantamweight boxing champion will also speak to the crowd with her inspiring personal story.
Workways Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that has been making lives better for socially disadvantaged people across Eastern Australia for over 30 years.
One of Workways long-term goals in partnership with The Women’s Centre is to support women to gain the necessary skills and training and hands-on experience to enable them to enter or re-enter the workforce.
The coffee container provides the opportunity for hospitality training and management.
A portion of The Women’s Centre’s coffee container coffee sales will be donated back to the Women of Townsville to provide more training and education, which Workways proudly supports.
The Workways Work for the Dole program places job seekers into different types of local activities and projects to help them gain skills and experience to increase their chances of gaining employment as well as giving back to the community.
