The Victorian Sport Awards is the night of nights for the Victorian sporting community and this year they will celebrate participants, organisers, initiatives and the volunteers behind the scenes from all levels of sport in Victoria.

Nominations open for the 2020 Victorian Sport Awards on Monday 8 February, 2021 with details on who is eligible and how to nominate found here: http://vicsport.com.au/2020-victorian-sport-award-nominations

Sport at all levels is back and the 2020 Victorian Sport Awards are a celebration of the return to the playing field for Victorians and all the fun, inclusive and innovative activities that individuals and clubs undertook during lockdown and beyond to remain connected with their clubs and community.

Some outstanding examples include:

  • Basketball Victoria challenged their members with the #HoopsatHome challenge, showcasing trick-shots and skills

  • Gymnastics Victoria encouraged their members to compete in their Lockdown Challenges which included a handstand challenge for which club could maintain a handstand the longest.

  • Victorian Institute of Sport hockey players set up training courses at home using a number of household items.

Entrants in the Awards are nominated by friends, family, teammates, club members or their local community in recognition of their outstanding contribution to sport and active recreation.

This year, the inaugural Sports Accounting Australia Sport Initiative of the Year Award will be presented. This award recognises the work of individuals, clubs, teams, groups or organisations who have succeeded in enabling more people to participate in sport activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vicsport Chairman Ron Gauci says:

“The Victorian Sport Awards is the premier event on the Victorian sporting calendar and Vicsport is delighted to once again recognise and celebrate the wonderful achievements of the sport and recreation community this year.

“2020 was a year like no other and the impact on our lives, our mental and physical health as well as our livelihoods challenged us all to find new ways to cope.

“On May 25, we look forward to showcasing and honouring the innovative initiatives that sport produced in order to maintain connection throughout the industry while also getting the chance to celebrate our state’s triumphant return to sport.”

The Hon. Ros Spence, Minister for Community Sport says:

“These awards are a chance to recognise those home-grown sport champions who make community sport great. They also honour our inspirational elite sporting heroes that shine on the world stage.

“I urge everyone to consider nominating the administrators, volunteers, organisations, clubs, initiatives or events that deserves to be recognised for outstanding achievements in 2020.”

Each year the Victorian Sport Awards receives hundreds of nominations which aim to recognise and celebrate the exceptional members of the Victorian sporting community; the individuals and team athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers from both metropolitan and regional areas in Victoria.

The quality and breadth of the nominations received makes selecting the finalists a difficult endeavour, which is why 40 highly qualified Victorian sports people have been invited to constitute the judging panels charged with picking the finalists across the eight categories.

Judges include people from various diverse sporting groups with four-time Olympian Steve Moneghetti AM OLY, 12-time national hurdles champion Kyle Vander Kuyp OLY and two-time netball World Champion Sharelle McMahon previously featuring on the judging panels.

The Victorian Sport Awards are presented by the State Government of Victoria and Vicsport.

Held at Marvel Stadium, the Victorian Sport Awards can be attended by all entrants, nominees, family, friends, sporting organisations and clubs to celebrate the successes of community sport in Victoria.

Last year's Awards attracted 500 attendees including many of Victoria’s premier athletes and grassroots heroes.
