Apparition Media brings Club Wyndham Sydney building to life with largest street mural in NSW – 13 storey artwork
Courtesy of Apparition Media, the largest street mural in NSW, and one of Australia’s biggest, will soon adorn the façade of the Club Wyndham Sydney building with a 13-storey artwork underway on the inner-city hotel, located on the corner of Goulburn and Wentworth streets.
Due for completion around the 20 December, the mural will cover almost 2500 sqm across a combined 26 floors at the end of 12 weeks of work by Apparition Media artists.
This is the first time that the Apparition Media artists have worked while abseiling down a building, which brings its own challenges. Usually the artists work from a swing stage that hangs from the roof of the building.
The mural will feature the faces of a man and woman from the 1940s, as a nod to the World War II news reels and Hollywood movie premieres that were screened at the nearby Surry Hills Paramount Theatre before being released into the Australian market.
These films were Australia’s connection to the outside world, and it was during this time that big Hollywood movie stars like Bob Hope and Charlton Heston visited the city.
In recognition of the film and arts communities of Surry Hills, the woman will be holding a vintage home movie camera.
Pops of colour in the woman’s nails and the man’s eyes will enhance the black and white-toned retro design.
“It’s a pretty amazing feeling being up that high hanging off the side of a building and creating a piece of art. It hasn’t been without its challenges but all in all it has been an extremely rewarding process. Sydney needs more of this type of art around the city if it wants to remain culturally relevant and rival the other great cities around the world. It’s a shame there is not more of it here.” Hamish McBride, Artist.
“Its been a long road in bringing the hotel’s facade back to life giving it a solid grounding in the local community. Working with the hotel owners, we set out to design and paint not only a great mural but also create a new landmark for the city of Sydney itself” said Ryan Austin of Apparition Media.
“We’re immensely proud of our artists being recognised on the global stage, and really see this as doing our bit to help enmesh Australia into the global art scene” said Ryan Austin of Apparition Media.
Apparition Media work recently won the Best Mega Mural Award in the 2019 Australian Street Art Awards for their water tower mural in the NSW Riverina town of Narrandera.
