Lamaro’s Hotel South Melbourne to showcase international hospitality workers affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
September 24, 2024

Lamaro’s Hotel in South Melbourne is raising awareness of the plight of international hospitality workers who have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis and are ineligible for government support. Acclaimed Executive Chef and part owner, Geoff Lindsay, will shine the spotlight on his international kitchen staff by offering each of them the chance to design special menus that showcase their culture and traditions, available for pick-up each Thursday from April 23.

Currently, international workers on 457 and 482 visas are ineligible to receive government support during the COVID19 crisis, despite making up a significant number of skilled workers, particularly in the hospitality industry. By showcasing the work of his international staff, Lindsay hopes to firstly, keep them employed, and to shed some light on the struggles facing these workers who are the backbone of many kitchens around the country.

“Lamaro's relies on its share of wonderful international staff, so far from their homes and families at this scary time. We believe they deserve the same status and support as permanent residents. They should be allowed access to Centrelink payments and JobKeeper assistance. We would be lost without them,” said Geoff Lindsay – Executive Chef and part owner, Lamaro’s Hotel.

Each Thursday, one or more of Lindsay’s talented international staff members will design a bespoke menu available for pick up between 12:00pm and 6:00pm with a focus on their home culture and traditions.

About Lamaro’s Hotel:

Lamaro’s Hotel in South Melbourne is one of Melbourne’s quintessential gastropubs and has been a staple in our city’s pub scene since its reimagining by Pam Lamaro back in 2006. It was this strong culinary history that inspired executive chef Geoff Lindsay (Pearl, Dandelion, Saigon Street) and former Western Bulldogs star Paul Dimattina to take the reins and reopen its doors in 2017, bringing the space into the 21st century while honouring the venue’s Victorian heritage.

Lamaro’s Hotel in South Melbourne has transformed from gastropub to Gourmet Grocer and Boutique Wine Store, allowing customers to enjoy and recreate Lamaro’s delicious food and premium wine at home, during the COVID-19 restaurant and bar restrictions.

Executive Chef, Geoff Lindsay, has put together a series of sauces, gourmet meats & seafood, ready meals (including Geoff’s renowned red duck curry!), pasta, dumplings and other gourmet grocery ingredients for sale. Lamaro’s Hotel will also offer a range of boutique wines from their extensive list as well as house made negronis.
