Sony Pictures Commissions Australian Artists Apparition Media to Deliver Spider-Man: Homecoming Activation

Apparition Media artist Sam Yong has been selected by Sony Pictures to design a custom piece for the film Spider-Man: Homecoming, which will release in cinemas in Australia on July 6, 2017.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming mural will be painted by the team at Apparition Media in Melbourne Central’s Knox Lane. Painting will commence on June 6, and marks a major step forward for Australian artists and rebel marketing.

“You don’t get much more Melbourne than large-scale, painted murals,” said Tyson Hunter, co-founder of Apparition Media. “It’s great to see that our artists are being recognised on the world scale, and we can’t think of anyone better than Sam Yong to design this piece. He’s a huge fan of the comic and movie series, and his eccentric style is going to shed Spider-Man in a whole new light.”

Born in New Zealand, but calling Melbourne home, Sam has spent a significant part of his life travelling the world and garnering inspiration for his illustrations. His unique views of the world have captivated his 70,000 Instagram followers, and his work for Apparition Media is garnering the attention of advertisers world-wide.

“Sony approached us to paint the campaign, and we suggested they take a risk and allow Sam to design it. When they saw his personal collection, they knew his style would complement their campaign perfectly. His first sketch got sent straight to Sony Pictures and Marvel in the U.S. and they absolutely loved it. While Sam did design Spider-Man: Homecoming to a brief, he managed to keep all his distinctive creativity and flair,” Tyson said.

“Brands are always looking for ways to target their fans in an authentic fashion. I can’t think of anything more authentic than having a fan designing the artwork, and having it hand-painted in the middle of Melbourne. Huge props to Sony Pictures for deciding to push the boundaries with this campaign – we cannot wait for Melbourne to see it.”

Apparition Media are filming a mini documentary around the creation of the campaign, and will be painting from Tuesday June 6. The mural will be complete and on display for the public for five weeks, from Friday June 9.
