Taking place at the historic centre of Melbourne’s migration hub, a new art exhibition will celebrate our society’s diversity.

Taking shape this week with project partners Multicultural Arts Victoria and Albert Park College Year 8 art students, the second exhibition in City of Port Phillip’s ARTcontained project at Station Pier, Port Melbourne, will launch Monday, 11am, 28 September.

The exhibition, Painting the Port, led by visual artist Michael Fikaris and street artist Ero Art, includes three kids’ workshops for the public taking place 11am-3pm from 28-30 September for the school holidays.

Images created with the kids will examine the community we are a part of by looking at the different paths that have led to our rich diversity and asks where we are heading.

MAV Chief Executive Officer Jill Morgan said the exhibition presents a fantastic opportunity for community involvement with exciting contemporary artists.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the young people in City of Port Phillip to have a voice and let people know who they are in the community,” Ms Morgan said.

ARTcontained is a long-term commitment by Council to attract more people to the Port Melbourne Waterfront, with four groups displaying separate exhibitions with four shipping containers from August 2015 to April 2016.

Mayor Amanda Stevens said ARTcontained was continuing to build on the exciting work started by previous exhibitors, Academy of Design Australia.

“This unique arts space on our waterfront is a great drawcard for local businesses looking to capitalise on visitors, especially with droves of kids and their families attending the workshops” Cr Stevens said.

“MAV will also tie in the Port’s history to their exhibit to provide tourists with a colourful and engaging snapshot of Port Melbourne’s importance as a migration hub.”

The exhibition space will be open between 11am-3pm each weekend from 3 October until 15 November. For more information about the exhibit and upcoming events, visit www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/ARTcontained.htm.
